Amy and Chris’s wedding was several years in the making.  Amy and Chris met several years ago, they were friends for a while then they went their separate ways.  As destiny would have it, they ran into each other and reconnected.  During a trip to Hawaii Chris and Amy’s love blossomed and they were engaged.  It is evident how much Chris loves Amy and Harlow (Amy’s daughter).  During the wedding ceremony Chris dropped to a knee and asked Harlow to be his daughter, she said yes and gave Chris a huge hug.  At that moment my eyes started sweating ;).

We were blessed with some beautiful skies that night.  The wedding pictures we captured are beautiful.  This is one of the reasons that although Amy and Chris live in the bay area they chose a Palm Springs wedding venue.  As a Palm Springs wedding  photographer I knew that Amy really wanted to see the beautiful sky in her wedding pictures and that is why we use the best lighting system.  I love natural light photography but you can’t get those beautiful skies without using great lighting.  I can say that Amy and Chris loved their wedding pictures.

We have several Palm Springs Venues here that are great for destination weddings however the Mission Hills Country club has been recently redesigned and offers great views of the San Jacinto mountains.   They have a wonderful wedding coordinator named Tiffani Johnston.  She is very knowledgeable and will help you plan your perfect Palm Springs Wedding.

For your engagement photography session, it’s important to wear clothing that you can sit, stand, and walk comfortably in, because you will be moving around a lot, in order to capture a variety of different engagement photo poses.

Don’t forget to think about your shoes. Ladies, we all know that the perfect pair of shoes can make your outfit. Unfortunately, those shoes tend not to be the most comfortable Consider bringing an extra pair of flats or sandals to walk around in, especially if you engagement session will be in Palm Springs or a beach.

Dress in clothes that are in the same color palette – but are not exactly the same. Think blues and grays, or browns and reds. There is no need to match perfectly, but looking coordinated with the same style of dress is important. Guys, if you want to wear jeans and a polo shirt, double-check that your lady isn’t looking at a new amazing cocktail dress for your engagement images (and ladies, if you found that perfect cocktail dress, then dress him up!). If you are having your engagement photography session in Palm Springs we recommend using colorful clothing against the neutral desert colors.

If you are going for a casual look, there are a few simple ways to give casual looks that extra pop. For guys, try collared shirts with dark jeans and lace-free dress shoes (if you are wearing sneakers make sure they are nice and clean). Girls, you can never go wrong with a great sundress. If it’s a bit chillier for your engagement session, dark jeans with amazing shoes are also a great dressy /casual combo. Fitted clothes (although not skintight clothes) translate better in photographs than loose, baggy garb. Anything hanging off your body (baggy) will make you look bigger than you are, and sloppier, too.

Stick to solid colors or subtle patterns. Bold stripes, large designs, and polka dots stand out too much, and tend to draw attention away from your face, which should be the main focus of your portraits. A mix of patterns can clash and reduce the quality of your engagement portraits. This isn’t to say that you can’t wear any patterns at all. Just be selective.

If one of you wants to wear a pinstriped or plaid shirt, it will work best if the other wears a top in a solid color seen in the pattern of your significant other’s top. This goes for both of you, don’t forget to accessorize, jewelry, watches etc…

Most importantly: Be comfortable and have fun with your engagement session! You will have a much better time, which always makes for better photos.

White shirts and jeans don’t have much personality, and your engagement session is your time to let your personality shine. Try to avoid complete black and/or white – gray or ivory will complement your skin far better.

The most important thing to remember when preparing for engagement photos is that we are photographing the two of you, so be yourself! Dress nicely, but don’t get so “dressed up” that you are uncomfortable. Interact with each other the way you normally would. Go ahead, ignore your photographer (for the most part)! Goof off, make faces, cuddle, laugh, play – in short, be excited. It’s all about having fun and being in love.

Great ideas for props:
Sunglasses, a “Save the Date” sign, musical instruments (you may play), hats, pets or something that is important to you both.

Remember these ideas are more like guidelines not necessarily rules. The most important thing is to be yourself and have FUN!!!

Melinda and John made every effort to make their wedding day elegant and classic. When I was hired as the wedding photographer, they told me they did not want anything too out of the box and although they liked my creative wedding pictures they wanted to focus on a classic look. This Coachella wedding was held in a beautiful ranch.

They were both so nervous when I saw them. Though everything was traditional, they followed my suggestion to see each other prior to the ceremony. This was awesome! It allowed me more time with them, as the ceremony was late.   This is not always possible because for some couples tradition trumps all but for this couple they were interested in having images with lots of light.

Melinda and John wanted to start their day at the La Quinta park which is lovely and traditional. I was looking for something that would give them a classic timeless look while pushing the envelope slightly.  Once we were done with the park pictures, I asked Melinda if she would let me take them to an abandoned restaurant. Initially she was a little reluctant about that idea but once she received her images those were her favorite.

As an experienced wedding photographer, it is my job to give every couple what they want, and sometimes push them towards something they might not have known they wanted.

I offered to do a “wedding photography redo”, she would get back into her wedding dress and he into his suit to take pictures of the “wedding day”. She loved the idea so much that we even did an engagement session redo.

Sandy loved the Palm Springs windmills and the overall feel of the city so we planned a Palm Springs wedding and engagement.

The results were amazing! It turned out to be one of my favorite wedding shoots.

Sandy was elated with her new Palm Springs wedding pictures. Sandy had an open mind and was pushing me for creative wedding pictures and we delivered.

Getting creative with wedding photography

On the day of the shoot Sandy called me very worried that it was cloudy and gloomy and that she was looking to reschedule. I told her that they sky was perfect and that it would lend itself to even more creative wedding pictures. She was hesitant but trusted in me so we continued as planned.

During the shoot I showed her a few of the images from my camera to ease her mind about the clouds. Once she saw the results she relaxed and began to have fun.
